Flooding in Johor has impacted six 5G telecommunication transmission stations, leading to service disruptions. The Deputy Communications Minister assured that the situation is being monitored and service will be restored once power supply is re-established. The MCMC has provided free Wi-Fi at flood relief centers in affected areas.
Six 5G telecommunication transmission stations in Johor have been affected by recent floods. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching disclosed that the affected stations were distributed across the Johor Baru district (five) and Pontian (one). The disruption stems from a loss of electricity supply, which has not impacted 4G service. Teo expressed confidence that the stations will become operational once power is restored, emphasizing the ongoing monitoring of the situation.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has proactively furnished flood relief centers in Sabah, Sarawak, and Johor with free Wi-Fi access. In Johor specifically, free Wi-Fi is currently offered at Dewanraya Taman Senai Utama and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Batu. Two additional locations – Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Kuo Kuang and Sekolah Kebangsaan Bukit Mutiara – are slated to receive free Wi-Fi infrastructure shortly. Furthermore, Teo revealed that telecommunication companies have disseminated approximately 8 million early disaster warning Short Message Service (SMS) alerts to users from November 2022 to February 10, 2023. The number of alerts sent each month varied, with November seeing 2.7 million, December reporting 4.1 million, January registering one million, and February, as of February 10th, recording 13,700. Teo expressed gratitude towards these companies for collaborating with the government in this crucial endeavor. She also urged the public to remain vigilant, pay attention to these warnings, and take appropriate precautions to avoid any unfortunate incidents. Earlier in the day, Teo, who also represents Kulai as its MP, presented donations consisting of mattresses and reclining chairs at Dewanraya Taman Senai Utama, a shelter housing 136 flood evacuees
