Flood-hit states en route to recovery

THE flood situation in Penang is on the verge of recovery as both relief centres in two districts in the state were shut down, while the number of flood victims in Johor and Sabah is also dropping., State Environment and Welfare Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said all 59 flood victims from 17 families placed at the Kubang Menerong Community Hall in North Seberang Perai and SK Bakap Indah, South Seberang Perai were allowed to return home this evening.
“We have also inspected all the houses of the flood victims to ensure that their homes are safe to live in again. The good weather today has also helped the water recede and cleaning work could be carried out,” he told Bernama., the number of victims at relief centres decrease to 769 people as of 8pm, against 819 recorded at 4pm.
The State Disaster Management Committee, in a statement tonight, said 743 victims from 210 families affected by flash floods were placed in five relief centres in the Batu Pahat district, while 26 people from nine families were still housed at a centre in Segamat., only 134 victims from 40 families remained at one relief centre in the Beaufort district, down from 224 victims from 63 families recorded this evening.
The Sabah secretariat, in a statement, said all relief centres in Telupid were closed. – Bernama, February 4, 2023.
