Steady rain has dampened the bushfire crisis in the state's east, but has also sparked new fears.
But eastern Victoria is now grappling with multiple flood warnings this morning.
The most serious this morning is for the Acheron River at Taggerty, where people are warned to avoid the flooded area.It could possibly reach 2.6 metres, a moderate flood level, this morning. The warnings in eastern Victoria follow significant falls of rain into the Goulburn River catchment, including isolated totals of 115mm in the 24 hours to 11pm last night.
The concern is that communities in east Gippsland could be cut off due to rising floodwaters, while the rain may not be enough to completely extinguish the bushfires. The Bureau of Meteorology said that on Wednesday, a low pressure system will develop near the Victorian and NSW border, amplifying widespread rain, thunderstorms, large swell and damaging winds.A minor flood warning remains in place for the Yarra River in Melbourne, after about 70mm of rain in its upper and lower catchments since Monday, with more on the way.
