MANILA, Philippines – The National Privacy Commission met with telecommunication companies to address Filipinos’ data privacy concerns in relation to the implementation of the SIM Card Registration Act, the NPC said on Friday, December 30.

“Their obligation to comply with the SIM Registration Act comes hand in hand with ensuring that data privacy and protection is upheld. Such includes the implementation of mechanisms that would allow the assurance to its data subjects that the data being collected are for the purposes of the SIM Card Registration,” the privacy chief added.In the registration process of Globe, for example, users are asked to agree to a list of conditions.

The Junk SIM Registration Network, another advocacy group, told Rappler in an email on Friday: “As we’ve seen in other countries, having a centralized database of our personal information can be dangerous, especially if the telco’s databases are breached and our data leaked.”
