Five foreign nationals, including a woman, were each fined RM1,200 by the Magistrate's Court here today after pleading guilty to rioting in the Bukit Bintang entertainment district last December. They are Syrian Abdal Glel, 26, and three Algerian nationals, Mouaad Lazib, 26, Haithem Nouaouia, 29, and Yasin Nasah, 22, as well as Moroccan woman, Oumaima Mallas, 26. The Magistrate, Farah Nabihah Muhammad, also ordered all the accused to be jailed for a month if they fail to pay the fine.
All the accused were charged with committing the offence at Jalan Changkat, Bukit Bintang here at 5.50 am on December 23. The charge was brought under Section 147 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum sentence of two years imprisonment or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Amritpreet Kaur Randhawa requested a deterrent sentence so that the accused would not repeat the offense.
