Louisiana records the first fatality from avian influenza in the US, prompting a statement from health officials.
The United States has recorded its first death from avian influenza, according to health officials in Louisiana . The victim was an elderly person over 65 years old with other health complications and was hospitalized due to respiratory problems. It is believed that the victim was exposed to a combination of poultry and wild bird viruses on their property. According to a statement, this is the first serious case of H5N1 virus infection detected in humans in the country.
However, authorities assert that the risk to public health from avian influenza remains at a ‘low’ level. At least 67 cases of avian influenza have been recorded in the country so far. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that most cases of human avian influenza infection in the US have been detected in the last 10 months. Most cases reported are mild with symptoms like red eyes, cough and sneeze. -agenc
