The first US case of coronavirus transmitted person-to-person is confirmed, bringing the total number of US cases to 6

As the death toll from the coronavirus climbed to 170, U.S. health officials on Thursday reported the first U.S. case of person-to-person spread of the virus — the husband of a Chicago woman who recently came down with the illness after visiting China.

The new case, confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at a news conference, is the sixth reported in the United States. The first five had developed the illness after traveling to China. The new virus has now infected more people in China than were sickened there during the 2002-2003 outbreak of SARS, another type of coronavirus.

He estimated the death rate of the new virus at 2% but said the figure was very preliminary. With fluctuating numbers of cases and deaths, scientists are only able to produce a rough estimate of the fatality rate, and it’s likely many milder cases of the virus are being missed. Israel’s El Al and Korean Air also joined the growing list of airlines – British Airways, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Swiss, Air France and KLM – that were suspending or reducing service to China.
