Although steady rain tapered off overnight, rain that moved in from the west, changed over to snow as a blast of cold arctic air arrived by late morning.
Bands of gusty snow showers were possible with briefly low visibility Friday. Snow accumulations should be little to none outside of where snow squalls hit. Any snow or rain that doesn’t dry out, will freeze as the evening goes on. By midafternoon, winds already began pushing out the snow and the sun even sometimes broke through the clouds.Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are possible through early Friday evening. Due to the saturated ground, some of these gusts may topple trees causing power outages. By 1:45 p.m., almost 17,000 PECO customers were without power.
Also, watch out for flooding along the New Jersey coast and Delaware River. There was even some water on Columbus Boulevard in Philadelphia Friday afternoon.Another huge element of the storm that we need to prepare for is the temperature freefall on Friday. Around 6 a.m. temperatures were the low 50s, but as the arctic blast arrived, temperatures plunged into the 20s during the afternoon and should drop into the teens during the evening.
That's right, at 1 a.m. Friday, the high in Philly was 59 degrees. By 11 p.m. Friday it will be around 13. It will be feeling even colder with sub-zero feels-like temps expected. So, bundle up!Brutal cold quickly becomes the big story Friday evening through all of Christmas weekend. The coldest Christmas since 1989 is expected. The most intense and painful cold will be felt Friday night into Saturday morning with wind-chills around -5 Fahrenheit in the City to -15 in the Poconos.
