Firefighters faced a tough battle on California's Mosquito Fire on Tuesday as the the blaze grew to nearly 60,000 acres.
The Forest Service said that the No. 1 priority Wednesday is"strengthening and securing the southwest corner of the fire to protect and defend the communities of Foresthill and Todd Valley."operations meeting
that Foresthill was secure and the southwesterly winds expected to pick up Wednesday afternoon will likely push flames away from the town. The fire grew on its east edge all night long and this section is expected to be most active today, with winds pushing the fire to the east into dense, dry forestland.
"We're ready for an absolute blowup out here," Pangburn said of the fire's eastern edge."It doesn't need a lot of wind." Thousands of homes are threatened by the multi-county wildfire and more than 11,000 people evacuated as fire activity is expected to increase.The Mosquito Fire has been burning for more than a week after igniting Sept. 6 near Oxbow Reservoir 3 miles east of Foresthill in Tahoe National Forest.
