Sparks escaped from a burn barrel on the island and ignited the fire.

“It ignited dead grass that had been recently exposed after snowmelt, and the fire quickly took off from there and spread through the grass,” said Fish and Game’s lands and refuges manager Adam Dubour. Dubour said staff thought it was safe to use the burn barrel because the ground was damp, but they didn’t take into account how dry the grass was.Staff first reported the fire to the Alaska Division of Forestry late Tuesday afternoon. It got close to four buildings, but did not cause major damage, and no one was injured.
