JOHOR BARU: The Marine police seize more than RM1.6mil's worth of firecrackers and fireworks in Johor Baru on New Year's Eve.
Marine Police Region 2 Commander Asst Comm Abdul Rahman Mohamad said demand for firecrackers and fireworks was good during Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali and on the eve of new year.
"Last year , there were only eight similar cases in Johor but with the goods seized being of much higher value at RM5.46mil," he said. ACP Rahman said the items smuggled in from China were seized at two different locations in Johor Baru. In the second operation, 256 boxes of the smuggled items worth RM561,570 were confiscated from a shop-lot at Taman Perniagaan Setia here on Dec 31 at about 7pm.
