A mysterious fire has gutted a chapel in Chokragaon, a village in the northeastern Indian state of Assam that celebrated the ordination of two local young men two days ago.
Authorities are investigating the January 15 night fire that reduced to ashes St. Theresa of Child Jesus Chapel under the Ambagaon parish of Tezpur diocese. The Church authorities suspect the involvement of some anti-social elements in the incident. The fire broke out around 10 pm on January 15 while the villagers were engaged in a marriage celebration. Some villagers said they watched in shock and sadness as the fire engulfed their church.“We are heartbroken by this incident. Our village chapel meant so much to us,” said Benjamin Tudu, a local village catechist. “We urge everyone to pray for the faithful of Chokragaon village during this very difficult and challenging time for us.
