Residents have been warned to prepare for 'fire weather days' as more than 300 houses have been destroyed and 102 damaged in the past eight days | sarah_a_muller

More than 300 houses have been destroyed and 102 damaged in NSW in the past eight days, as firefighters urge residents to use the weekend to "get ready" for potentially worsening conditions.

The bushfire, currently more than 112 thousand hectares, has already destroyed at least six houses and is continuing to spread quickly.Fire crews were able to conduct backburning operations to get ahead of the fire on Friday evening and throughout Saturday to strengthen the containment lines, but they anticipate conditions worsening early next week.

In other parts of the state, more than 130 fire brigades used Saturday's calmer conditions to help residents prepare for the remainder of the bushfire season, recommending that those not facing immediate threat use the weekend to "get ready". A total fire ban will be in place for the Greater Hunter region, and along the Queensland border on Sunday.

A man aged in his 70s is in a serious but stable condition on Saturday afternoon after he fell three metres from a ladder in an area ravaged by bushfires.
