Popovich is coming back next season, until he lets the Spurs know he isn’t.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 20: Head coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs calls out a play to his players against the Golden State Warriors in the fist half of an NBA basketball game at Chase Center on March 20, 2022 in San Francisco, California. And now, just like in April, all signs point to that happening in 2023 at the earliest, even with a possible successor becoming available. Popovich enjoyed the heck out of himself last season, and the combination of three first-round draft picks plus a ton of salary-cap space should pique his interest this summer.

And if Snyder’s eventual return coincides with Popovich’s eventual departure? Well, the increasingly popular assumption that one could replace the other might not be so crazy. When he got his shot as a head coach in Utah in 2014, Snyder made no secret of his plans to build a contender in the Spurs’ image, in much the same way that Popovich and R.C. Buford once had modeled the Spurs after the much-admired Jazz program built by Jerry Sloan.
