When Jerry Jones says he has “a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this one playoff game,” he’s absolutely right. It’s just that not all of it is good.
The length of the Cowboys’ stay in the playoffs likely corresponds with coach Mike McCarthy’s amount of job security.Jerry Jones is being totally reasonable. Let’s concede that right up front.
“I’ve got a lot more to evaluate Mike McCarthy on than this playoff game,” Jones told a Dallas radio station on Tuesday. If they can’t finally beat Tom Brady for the first time in eight tries, with the worst team he’s had, what makes them think things ever will get any easier? Then there’s the memory of McCarthy’s first Dallas playoff game, in which disastrous clock management led to a meltdown loss to San Francisco at AT&T Stadium last January.
Or they could win, and watch everything set up perfectly the rest of the month. In the divisional round they’d get a Philadelphia team they’ve already beaten once. Survive that and they’d face either a Minnesota team they dominated in the regular season or, more likely, a 49ers squad led by a rookie quarterback selected with the final pick in the draft.
