Dinner with Spurs greats Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Sean Elliott and Manu Ginobili a Blissful experience for the team's newest star, Victor Wembanyama.
Former Spurs player Sean Elliott interviews Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 overall NBA draft pick, during a Meet the Rookies event at Arneson River Theater on Saturday. Fans were introduced to Wembanyama and the Spurs 44th overall selection Sidy Cissoko, far right, another 19-year-old Frenchman. At a chef’s table in the middle of a Southtown kitchen Friday night, Victor Wembanyama found himself in, well, Bliss.
But this first dinner? The one at Bliss with Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Manu Ginobili and Sean Elliott? The one Wembanyama walked out of and immediately described to his agent as the best dining experience he’d ever had? Yes, he and his family have planned for this since before he turned 13. Yes, he has expected this since he decided to learn English, specifically because he realized an NBA star should speak it. Yes, he has prepared his body and mind for this in almost every way, from the meticulous foot stretches he does every morning to every night at 9 p.m. on the dot, when he turns off his phone and reads.
Here, though, is the truly striking part of this: Talk to anyone in the organization, from Buford and chairman Peter J. Holt to the staffers who received high-fives from Wembanyama at his introductory press conference at the AT&T Center on Saturday, and they’ll tell you that the comfort level already has worked both ways.
