Emotions are high, especially for Jews and Muslims in the U.S. who are afraid and yet find comfort in their respective religious services over these last weeks.

“Psalms come to mind as the source which acknowledges feelings of deep distress while trying to offer comfort and encouragement that God hears our pain,” said Rabbi Karen Kaplan, spiritual leader of Congregation B’nai Israel on the border of Kearny and North Arlington.

Alhayek said the students were all familiar with the tragic murder of the 6-year-old Palestinian-American boy and severe wounding of his mother, allegedly by their landlord, in a Chicago suburb. He reflected that when he brought his little girl to religious school at the temple after the conflict began and saw the scores of Jewish children playing and laughing and learning about their heritage and their faith, “I started thinking about the world that they will live in.”

“Taking advantage of the weakness of the Palestinians to force a peace treaty on them won’t help and won’t work,” said Alhayek. “This is subjugation, this is not peace, this is not fair.”
