Chilling audio has captured the final words of the pilot behind a light aircraft that crashed near Canberra on Friday afternoon.
The four-seater Cirrus SR22 took off from Canberra Airport around 2.30pm and was heading for Armidale before crashing around Gundaroo in the NSW Southern Tablelands shortly after in a fiery blaze.
A few minutes after takeoff, the plane is heard to be “four miles east of Canberra” before it was told to “resume navigation and track direct to Cullen”. An air traffic controller at Canberra Approach made several attempts to make contact with the pilot after noticing something seemed wrong however his repeated call “Mike Sierra Foxtrot, this is Canberra Approach” was repeatedly met with silence.
“Be advised a flight has just dropped off radar so there may be some delays at the moment until we can get some further instructions,” they said.Shocking images of the plane crash site have shown the devastating wreck near Hadlow Dr, Gundaroo and how it was completely destroyed, scorching the ground on which it exploded.
