The Department of Health in South Africa confirmed that 1,448 babies were born on New Year's Day across the country's public health facilities. Gauteng province had the highest number of births with 387, followed by the Eastern Cape and Limpopo.

“The Department of Health, working together with sister Departments of Social Development and Basic Education, will continue to support all mothers through existing programmes to ensure their babies survive and thrive,” the department said.
