Ferrari and Toyota duel set after 16 hours at Le Mans.

With the long night over and the second day of the 24 Hours of Le Mans well underway, a clearer picture of the final battle to win the race has finally formed. After issues have derailed competitors from Cadillac, Peugeot, and Porsche, a long battle between Toyota and Ferrari's leading entries is well underway.

Both the No. 50 Ferrari and No. 5 Porsche have fallen out of contention after suffering leaks that required 20 minutes of repairs within half an hour of one another. That initially left a four-car battle in the front between the No. 51 Ferrari, No. 8 Toyota, No. 94 Peugeot, and No. 2 Cadillac in the overnight hours. It became a three-horse race when the No. 94 Peugeot crashed in a Mulsanne chicane, necessitating repairs in the garage.

That gradually stretched to just two as the Ferrari and Toyota both pulled away from the No. 2 Cadillac, exchanging the lead based largely on tire strategy and never getting more than 20 seconds away from one another. Both are now around two minutes ahead of the Cadillac on track, and neither seems to have a notable pace advantage on the other.

In LMP2, No. 34 Inter Europol car leads over the No. 41 Team WRT entry. GTE-Am is led by the No. 57 Kessel Racing Ferrari ahead of the No. 85 Iron Dames Porsche. The Garage 56 NASCAR stock car still runs ahead of all but six GT cars, but the team has struggled to make progress on that position in what has otherwise been a notably clean race for Hendrick Motorsports.

With eight hours to go, the race has left plenty of time for things to go wrong. If these lead contenders are still in position with an hour to go, this may become an instant classic.
