Gov. Newsom sends request for FEMA aid to President Biden to bolster emergency response and recovery in nine California counties.
Gov. Gavin Newsom took a key step on Tuesday in getting FEMA aid to California communities recovering from devastating damage caused by recent atmospheric river storms, including the small town of Pajaro where about 3,000 residents were flooded out of their homes.
The Presidential Major Disaster Declaration request encompasses the communities impacted by flooding, snow, mudslides, avalanches, and debris flows that resulted from storms beginning February 21. A Major Disaster Declaration from the President means victims of disaster events in those counties are eligible for help though FEMA’s programs, including the Public Assistance and Individual Assistance programs, as well as other programs that include housing assistance, food aid, counseling, medical services and legal services.
Across the nine counties in the governor’s request, 42 homes and businesses have been destroyed, 378 have suffered major damage, 171 have suffered minor damage and 87 have bee affected by heavy flooding. The estimated private property loss thus far is estimated to be $329 million, and the number is expected to rise. The request says Monterey County alone, one of the largest producers of produce in the United States, is reporting agricultural losses exceeding $450 million.
