Ordained minister, counselor and LGBTQ+ advocate Felicia Ann Fontaine was perhaps best known outside of Huntsville for her meetings with the Rev. Jerry Falwell, Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, and other prominent anti-gay conservatives.
Felicia Ann Fontaine, one of Alabama’s best-known, respected and loved gay advocates, died at her Huntsville home Nov. 30. She was 68.
“There was an agreement with Roy Moore that we would not make a big deal or tell things that were said in private in public,” said friend and conversation participant the Rev. Helene Loper. “There was some confidentiality to have some safe space for him. But she came away from that meeting with some promises from him that were never put in the paper.”
Fontaine helped start Samaritan Family Services for the LGBT community in 1988 and was active in the local chapter of the National Association for Women. She was an ordained pastor and a licensed counselor whose guidance was sought and valued by gay people and their families from modest means to the wealthy and powerful in the community.
