Unclear how the FBI broke Apple’s encryption, but inside the Pensacola shooter’s phone was a link to Al Qaeda.

Attorney general William Barr, speaking during a news conference on Monday, didn’t disclose how the FBI broke Apple encryption. He credited the “relentless efforts of FBI technicians.” FBI director Chris Wray credited the FBI’s technical skill too.

Wray said the FBI needed the help from Apple months ago and that “the delay... seriously hampered this investigation.” He said co-conspirators had more time to make evidence disappear. Barr also expressed his disappointment with Apple. “Apple has made a marketing decision... that only user can unlock the contents no matter the circumstances... Apple’s decision has dangerous consequences for public safety and national security. It is in my judgement unacceptable.”
