Minister of Natural Resources Jonathan Wilkinson announced $10 million in federal funding to further renewable resource development in Sask.

Joined in the sunny atrium of the First Nations University of Canada by a number of guests, Wilkinson said the funding is in service of addressing climate change targets by bolstering the development of renewable energy options that will reduce target emissions.

“Its something we all, across this country, need to do as we look to fight climate change and do so in a way that will promote not only independence, but also jobs and economic opportunity.” MLTC Chief Richard Ben said the project is an excellent step in expanding renewable resources in the province, as well as in promoting affordable and accessible resources and job opportunities for Indigenous people.

Chief Richard Ben of the Meadow Lake Tribal Council expressed thanks to the federal government for continuing to fund clean energy development taking place in Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan.Another $2 million will be used to replace propane heating systems at schools in Pelican Narrows and Deschambault Lake with bioheat, reducing fossil fuel usage by 90 per cent.

CEO Guy Lonechild said the FNPA has identified at least 15 communities that are not connected to SaskEnergy infrastructure, leaving residents in parts of both northern and southern Saskatchewan struggling with exorbitant energy bills.
