The report named stillbirths a “major public health concern” that the U.S. must address through research and prevention.

“Findings on factors associated with stillbirths will inform CDC’s next steps, including further research and potential prevention efforts,” the spokesperson said. The report noted that while Medicaid covers a large portion of pregnancies and births, it does not cover the cost of an autopsy. Experts previously toldthat they believed an autopsy after a stillbirth should be covered as a continuation of maternal care.
