A federal judge in Los Angeles has issued a temporary restraining order blocking President Donald Trump's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship in the United States. The decision suspends the enforcement of Trump's executive order for 14 days, which is considered one of the most controversial directives signed shortly after his inauguration for his second term. The judge, John Coughenour, appointed by former President Ronald Reagan, called the order 'clearly contrary to the Constitution' and described the issue as 'extraordinary'. The ruling came after 22 states, two cities, and various civil rights groups filed lawsuits challenging the order, arguing that the 14th Amendment, ratified in 1868 after the Civil War, has been a solid law for over a century. They cited a 1898 Supreme Court ruling in the case of Wong Kim Ark, a Chinese-born man from San Francisco who was denied re-entry to the US after visiting family in China, which established that children born in the US, including those of immigrants, cannot be denied citizenship.
