Members of the Semai tribe claim that their ancestral land is being cleared without their consent.
The Orang Asli settlers of Ulu Geruntum in Gopeng have secured an interim injunction from the Federal Court to prevent the construction of a dam pending a full hearing of their claim to ancestral land.
The bench, which also consisted of Justices Mary Lim and Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil, awarded the Orang Asli RM50,000 in costs. On April 21, 2021, then judicial commissioner G Bhupindar Singh allowed the Orang Asli an interlocutory injunction against Perak Hydro Renewable Energy Corporation Sdn Bhd and Conso Hydro RE Sdn Bhd, and their agents pending the disposal of the main suit.
They are seeking declarations that they are the legal owners of the ancestral land in Ulu Geruntum and that the defendants have no right to damage or extinguish their land rights.
