“This appears to be a planned and targeted theft and as it was over Easter and the chicks could easily have moved interstate,” a representative for the farm, based in Winchelsea, about 115km southwest of Melbourne, said in a Facebook post. The farm’s operator, Michael Hastings, said the chicks needed specialist care and would be in grave danger.
“The reality is that ostrich chicks, when they’re young, do require specialist care and anybody that would go and steal them, that don’t have any respect for the livestock or their welfare, aren’t likely to look after them properly,” he told Melbourne radio station 3AW on Wednesday. The thieves may have been motivated by money, he said, and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
