The failure of that toothless crackdown prompted House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer, R-Kentucky, to write a letter to FDA Commissioner Robert Califf. In his letter, Comer insisted the agency improve the way the Center for Tobacco Products administers tobacco and nicotine regulatory programs as required by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.the “industry uncertainty and unsafe products reaching the marketplace” due to the agency’s severe deficiencies.
The FDA’s crackdown has consisted of little more than warning letters to companies marketing illegal e-cigarettes, and further enforcement actions have been limited at best. More needs to be done to ensure compliance with premarket review requirements for new tobacco products.Adult vaping products have been shown to help smokers get off cigarettes.
Illegally marketed and unregulated e-cigarette products not only evade legal frameworks but also pose additional health and safety risks while undermining efforts to prevent underage usage. It is crucial for the FDA — which has the these markets — to take immediate action to protect public health, close regulatory gaps and hold bad actors accountable.I strongly urge our own U.S. Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Pilot Point, to join Comer’s call for more stringent enforcement of the out-of-control illegal vape market in the U.S. and help preserve the harm and reduction potential of regulated products for adult smokers.Anthony G.
