Malaysia is witnessing a surge in fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles. Experts point to poor maintenance, corrupt practices, and a lack of proper oversight as major contributing factors. They call for stricter regulations, improved infrastructure, and a greater emphasis on safety.
There has been a recent increase in fatal accidents involving heavy vehicles. The Selangor and Kuala Lumpur Lorry Operators Association secretary-general, Alvin Choong, attributes this to several factors, including bad driving, poor maintenance, and corruption. Choong highlights the lack of routine checks to ensure Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are implemented properly.
He cites a recent case in Melaka where improperly secured tires caused a detachment, emphasizing the need for competent drivers to recognize tire imbalances. Choong urges for constant monitoring and regular enforcement, advocating for a change in mindset among drivers and operators to prioritize safety over profit. Peninsular Malaysia Tour Bus Operators Association president, Steven Chong Sin Wah, adds that some lorry operators use borrowed tires to pass Puspakom inspections, switching back to worn-out tires afterward. Chong stresses the importance of well-lit highways to improve visibility and prevent accidents. He also emphasizes the need for companies to ensure bus drivers possess proper licenses.
