WHAT could be a better birthday gift for a father of seven, if not for the whole family joining him at the highest point in Borneo.
Captain Adrian Lim, a senior pilot with Malaysian Airlines, did exactly what he had in mind – to get all his children around him on his 50th birthday at 4,095m on Mount Kinabalu.
“We wanted it to be special. We were enthusiastic about bringing all our seven children for an adventure like never before.“Had I celebrated it the normal way at home, some of them would have ‘escaped’ by either hiding in their room, or busy clicking on their phones, doing their own things or playing with their laptops and ignoring me, the birthday boy,” he said, laughing.
He was proud of his wife for being able to organise the trip from the tiniest to major details and described it as not easy, especially when it comes to handling seven children.All made it to the summit except Keith, the eldest, and Kaylee, the youngest, due to sickness.Joanne, who celebrated her 50th last March, also had hers in style by doing motor bike ride around south island in New Zealand over 11 days, an idea initiated by Adrian.
Keith, who experienced stomach upset and diarrhoea, had to end his hike and rested at the Panalaban pit stop area together with sister Kaylee and Joanne, the mother had to accompany them. Keira, taking the journey as a spectacular experience and a priceless lesson she learned to never give up in life, no matter how hard the process is.
She, however, was disappointed with the food preparation at Kundasang eateries that caused them to have stomach upset.Karynna, a Form Two student, managed to reach the peak, and initially also wanted to give up due to fatigue. “So the whole family made it to the mountain despite three of them not being able to reach the top, but it is a great achievement and they will remember this day forever.
