Kota Kinabalu: A Kota Belud family is anxiously awaiting the return of their eldest daughter from Thailand after paying RM20,000 ransom to a Myanmar syndicate for her freedom, after she was bundled there to work for a scam syndicate.
Sherly Gehiol, 40, of Kg Tamu Darat is now stranded in Thailand as her passport was not returned by the syndicate. It is not clear whether the Malaysian embassy there had been notified of her predicament. Daily Express Malaysia
Sherly, a former diver with tourism qualifications, was said to have been lured by an offer for a “prospective casino job” in Thailand in June 2022. However, upon arrival, she was taken by a scam call centre syndicate to Myanmar, forced to meet scam targets or risk punishment by electrocution – all the while living in jail-like conditions.
