The forecast called for thunder showers, but rallygoers said they were the ones bringing the storm.
The group formed into a column midafternoon and marched up the street to the fence in front of the White House, waving signs and chanting anti-fentanyl slogans.
The rally skewed female, filled with self-described “mama bears” roaring their anger, grief and frustration over precursor chemicals from China, drug traffickers, dealers peddling tainted pills to the unsuspecting and social media sites where young people can order pills for delivery as easily as a pizza. They said many Americans have yet to wake to the seriousness of the problem and criticized government officials for failing to show enough urgency in tackling it.
Many of those in the crowd objected to any use of the word “overdose” and instead insisted on “poisoning” or “murder” as they relayed similar stories about sons and daughters who thought they were taking a Xanax or a Percocet but unwittingly consumed a lethal dose of fentanyl. “That is keeping people from educating their kids because they do think it’s a drug user problem and it’s not,” she said. “It’s not a drug user issue. It’s an everybody issue.”
