There’s a brittleness and soft underbelly to Ireland that remains a real cause for concern and citing youth as the reason just doesn’t wash any more
A familiar failing returned to sting Ireland on a night when Heimir Hallgrimsson should have opened his account with a maiden victory.
Chiedozie Ogbene scored a belter only for it to be ruled offside and Sammie Szmodics, Alan Browne, Will Smallbone and Callum Robinson all had chances to score and win the game. And as the number of squandered Irish chances clocked up, Christos Tzolis pounced on a ball over the top with three minutes remaining to seal victory.
After surviving an early VAR check for handball in the box, Greece enjoyed good possession and you wondered what sort of night Ireland were in for. Browne was another handed a start and gave more structure to an Ireland engine room that needed tinkering after seeing Smallbone and Molumby so swamped on Saturday.
Not only were Ireland using the ball well, but they were creating chances. Alas, composure was always lacking at the key moments. The pressure was building and Ireland just needed a breakthrough. And the fans - and Ogbene - thought they had it four minutes before half-time. Still, at that point, Ireland could have few complaints about how their night was going as they put in a solid shift in both attack and defence.
