The Fall of the House of Usher creator and director Mike Flanagan carefully responds to the popular Seven Deadly Sins theory, detailing his thoughts.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Summary The Fall of the House of Usher creator Mike Flanagan addresses the Seven Deadly Sins theory. In his last Netflix show before moving to Prime Video, Flanagan adapts the works of Edgar Allan Poe to tell the story of corrupt pharmaceutical company CEO Roderick Usher , who sees his children die off one by one after the re-emergence of the mysterious Verna .

In a recent Tumblr post, Flanagan is shooting down the Seven Deadly Sins as a way of explaining The Fall of The House of Usher. The creator acknowledges that there's room for viewers to produce different interpretations of the series, but he points out that Roderick only has six children, not seven. He also jokes that he already dealt with more overtly religious themes in his show Midnight Mass, adding that the David Fincher movie Se7en already did the seven deadly sins better.

I’ve heard this a few times today - I’m sorry to say that it was NOT our intention to have the Usher kids represent the 7 deadly sins. Roderick only has 6 children, for one thing, and I got most of my religious horror out of my system in Midnight Mass . I’m always happy to see people digging into the work, and typically don’t want to dissuade someone from whatever meaning they find there, but in this case I’d be lying if I said that was our intention.

Why The Seven Deadly Sins Theory Doesn't Work The reason the Seven Deadly Sins theory took off is that the first major death involving Perry is connected fairly strongly to lust. Perry talks a lot about sex, planning an orgy, and hitting on his brother's wife. His conversation with Verna is also heavily about lust. But even investigating that thread, it's slightly shakier than it first appears since almost all of Roderick's children exhibit lust in some way.

The theory doesn't really work beyond Perry. Camile , Victorine , and Tammy all have immense pride. Camile, for example, is too proud to beg for her life even as she knows she's about to die. Tammy is too proud to be vulnerable with her husband and too proud of the tightly wound image she's built for herself to actually slow down and take a breath. As for Leo , who is comparable to sloth, it's truer that he was likely the kindest of Roderick's kids.
