'Fake friend call scam' syndicate targeting Singaporeans busted in Johor; more than S$1.3m lost in over 360 cases

SINGAPORE, Feb 19 — Singapore and Malaysia’s police have arrested 12 people in a joint operation involving several raids in Johor, as they busted a

Of the 12 people aged between 16 and 27, one is female while the remaining 11 are male Malaysians. Investigations against them are ongoing.

Since January this year, more than 490 victims have fallen prey to such a scam, with at least S$1.7 million lost in total. Initial investigations found that the syndicate started its scam operations sometime in December 2022 and was using Singapore prepaid SIM cards to make calls to unsuspecting victims in the Republic.
