10 million in federal funding is expected to be directed to demolishing the boarded up building.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - The Polaris Building, a long-abandoned safety hazard in downtown Fairbanks, may be on its way out.
On Friday, March 11, Senator Lisa Murkowski announced that out of 230 million dollars of federal funding coming to Alaska, 10 million would be directed to demolishing the boarded up building. This latest development was applauded by Fairbanks North Star Borough Mayor Bryce Ward, who called it excellent news for the community.
Fairbanks Mayor Jim Matherly, meanwhile, says the work is just beginning. “Now we go get bids. We get people to give us the estimates to take it completely down, starting with the annex around the back, and then slowly from the top down. That’s my understanding is the best way to do it, closing off some streets and just leveling it.”
The omnibus bill, including the 10 million dollar allocation, passed the Senate on Friday and will next head to President Biden to be signed into law. According to Matherly, the borough has agreed to waive tipping fees at the landfill, saving the city around 2 million dollars in disposal fees.
