A competitive grant of $5.6 million was just awarded to the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation in hopes of improving the air quality and reducing emissions in the Fairbanks area.
Nick Czarnecki, the air quality manager for the Fairbanks North Star Borough, says that the work put into pollution-created health problems has been unfolding for 13 to 14 years now - ever since December 2009.
All funds will be put towards emission reduction in the Fairbanks and North Pole areas. The funding will maintain change-outs and upgrades of an estimated 2,000 outdated heating appliances. Borough Mayor Bryce Ward says, “The Borough’s change-out program is the most popular approach to bring clean, healthy air to our community.”All community members are encouraged to contact the Borough at 459-1005 to upgrade their oil or wood burning appliances, which will be backed by the federal and local funding. “We have a lot of options out there to help the community,” Czarnecki said.
