For four Senators seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, the Senate impeachment trial schedule means this may well be the last full weekend of campaigning in Iowa.

Warren, along with Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, is soon to be marooned in the Senate as a juror in President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. With the trial schedule up in the air, this weekend is likely the final full weekend of campaigning for those candidates before the kick-off caucus.
“I’m balancing,” Klobuchar said Saturday after speaking to an education union forum. She also said the weather wouldn’t keep her from campaigning this crucial weekend: “I found some way to get here. I didn’t go on a snowmobile, but I got here.” Well-funded candidates such as Warren and Sanders are considering putting private planes on hold in Washington so they can quickly fly to Iowa for late-night events after the trial wraps up. Sanders has already scheduled an 8 p.m. rally in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday.
The Senate trial has added a layer of uncertainty to the political climate in Iowa, where the Democratic race remains exceedingly close. Recent polls show Warren, Sanders, former Vice President Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg the former mayor of South Bend, Indiana, in a virtual tie, with Klobuchar trailing behind.
