From 2001: Photographs of the rappers—from Snoop Dogg to Lil’ Kim—ushering in a national phenomenon and a new era of music.

At first, hip-hop was a New York phenomenon, and rappers bragged about what borough they were from—the members of Run DMC famously called themselves “Kings from Queens.” Then Los Angeles emerged as rap’s second city, and a bicoastal feud began. Hip-hop is now a quarter of a century old, give or take a few years, and the phenomenon has gone national, with an increasing number of regional approaches.

Detroit, which has one of the country’s largest black populations, has produced only two rap stars, both white: Eminem and Kid Rock.

New York remains hip-hop’s capital. It is the home of the industry’s major labels and magazines, and of many of its most recognizable voices, from Kurtis Blow to Lil’ Kim. But rap’s decentralization has forced New York to acknowledge the rest of the country.
