The British government is expected to publish a white paper next week setting out new rules around how tech firms will be policed in the UK.

that the government would introduce a new tech regulator, which would have the power to impose massive fines on the likes of Facebook and Google if they don't rid their platforms of harmful content.

According to The Guardian, the government will initially ask the existing media regulator Ofcom to police the tech firms. Eventually, it will create an independent regulator, to be funded by a levy on tech firms. The UK government paper comes as governments around the world grapple with how to deal with the proliferation of hate speech and other harmful content online. The internet has historically been seen as beyond regulation but certain shifts have emboldened governments to act.

The second is issues such as the proliferation of hate content online, and the way young people use the internet. Facebook and other firms came under pressure after the Christchurch mosque shootings were livestreamed on Facebook and disseminated across other platforms. And the parents of a British teenager who killed herself, Molly Russell, said she did so partly because of self-harm content she had seen on Instagram.
