Eboni Booth’s 95-minute drama won the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama

He’s got a mai tai in his hand and a drinking buddy named Bert. But Kenneth’s a stranger. Most of all to himself.
With Caleb Eberhardt portraying Kenneth, “Primary Trust” is making its West Coast premiere beginning this week at La Jolla Playhouse’s 400-seat Mandell Weiss Forum Theatre. Knud Adams, who directed the 95-minute drama in New York, is also directing in La Jolla. “Primary Trust” finds 38-year-old Kenneth working at a bookstore, where he’s toiled for 20 years, when he’s not at Wally’s drinking and conversing with the enigmatic Bert .
Booth said she didn’t set out to write about that, but “I’m intrigued by loneliness. I find myself writing about the need for community and the difficulty in making connections. Emotionally, I find myself casting out a lot, trying to find people to love and to feel close to.” But the acting experience seems to have informed her ability to create real and empathetic characters as a writer. “Becoming a playwright,” she said, “has been a way to unite these two parts of myself. I felt so anxious about calling myself a writer. But with playwriting I heard that click in the back of my head. Something about it felt right to me.”
