A travel experience of exploring Alaska's glaciers on a cruise ship, with a focus on Glacier Bay National Park and the decision to sail on the Norwegian Encore.
Alaska had always piqued my interest. My husband Conor adores the Pacific Northwest and I was keen to see the glaciers. However, when we welcomed our little boy Elliot, I wasn’t sure it would still suit because some of the towns are accessible only by land or air, and the idea of a long road trip no longer appealed.
Top of my bucket list was seeing the Unesco World Heritage-listed Glacier Bay National Park, one of Alaska’s most spectacular settings with lofty mountain peaks, ice-sculpted fjords, and an abundance of marine wildlife. Its massive tidewater glaciers have made the 3.3 million acres world-famous. However, only three cruise lines are allowed to enter the bay annually, meaning it doesn’t feature on most Alaskan itineraries. Based on this, we opted to sail on the Norwegian Encore.
