For those looking to experience nature with all their senses, a hike led by Cleveland Museum of Natural History staff is one way to go.
The section of the 588-acre preserve to be featured includes a feeder stream to Mill Creek, which is a tributary of the Grand River. The area around the stream was recently added to the preserve after being acquired from Monte and Patricia Stoltz using money made available through the Water Resource Restoration Sponsorship Program, administered by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.
On a recent May morning I hiked along the feeder stream with museum experts, including Ormiston, Chief Science Officer Gavin Svenson, and Roberta Muehlheim, the museum’s assistant curator for vertebrates. She also identified another long-tailed amphibian caught by Svenson as a red-spotted newt. The orange-red coloring signals to predators to stay away because the newt produces toxins. according to Muehlheim. After its teenage phase, which usually lasts two to three years on average, the newt will go back into the water, having turned olive green with red spots on top and yellow coloring on its belly.
“When you see them you know you’re in an older system” that may have been logged, but not plowed, he said.Peter Krouse, cleveland.com The June 24 hike will include Ormiston and Muehlheim as guides, along with Ken Schneider, administrative coordinator for research and natural areas, and Tim Matson, a curator emeritus. Muehlheim said she will bring along her seine net in hopes of catching a fish called red dace.
