Peanut allergy rates could fall by as much as 77% if products containing peanuts were added to the diets of all babies at 4-6 months of age, according to scientists.
The study, which drew on data drawn from the LEAP and the Enquiring About Tolerance randomised trials, concluded that "healthcare professionals should help parents introduce peanut products into infants' diet at 4 to 6 months of life", when babies were developmentally ready to start solids. Mary Feeney, a clinical research dietitian at KCL, and study co-author, acknowledged that their conclusions were "different from the, which is the most recent, which is to start peanut products from around 6 months". However, "our suggestion is, is that these recommendations should be reviewed".
According to Prof Lack, "breast milk, in the first 6 months, probably contains, from a nutritional point of view, everything that is required for a child's growth and development", but as far as "protection against peanut allergy, and potentially other food allergies, breast milk unfortunately on its own does not contain these properties".
