SIBU: Expensive meranti timber logs and machineries valued at RM1.4mil have been seized by the 10th Battalion General Operation Force (GOF) in a surprise operation on a log pond in Sungai Uka, Poi in Kanowit.
Deputy commanding officer, Supt Frediel Nyambong said on Wednesday that two persons, a 50-year-old local man and a 39-year-old Indonesian, were arrested for being in possession of the items.Other items seized from the duo included an excavator, two four-wheel drive vehicles, a bulldozer, a chainsaw, a water pump, a generator set, and a welder.
"Based on information received from members of the public, our enforcement team conducted an operation at about noon on April 8 on the log pond which was believed to have been operating illegally. "The team comprised eight GOF members and 12 enforcement officers from Sarawak Forestry Corporation," he added."The local man admitted that he owned the machinery which he used for illegal logging activity in the area. He also failed to show any document to prove that he had a permit for the activity," he said.
