BANGKOK: Former Thai prime ministers Thaksin and Yingluck Shinawatra made rare publicised appearances at an expo in Las Vegas to showcase a start-up project which uses DNA samples to recommend food choices.

The siblings both live in self-imposed exile after being ousted by military coups during their tenures as prime minister. Thaksin was ousted in a 2006 coup after being accused of corruption and disrespect towards the monarchy. Yingluck was ousted in a 2014 coup led by Thailand's current prime minister, and fled the country when she was convicted of criminal negligence.

"Today my brother and I are here at Consumer Electronic Show 2020 Las Vegas, the United States, launching our business we invested and just launched in London during the end of last year," Yingluck said in a Thursday Facebook post. Thaksin said he was invited to invest in the venture dubbed DNANudge by Chris Toumazou, whom he described as a long-time associate, according to a promotional video for the project posted on Thaksin's Facebook page.

"I'm old now today and I don't want to invest in anything that's too big," Thaksin, 70, said."It's a business that benefits people so it should be fun.""It nudges the customer to shop for the best food product that gives us more choices that will help our behaviour and our health, based upon our own DNA," Toumazou, a founder of DNANudge, said in the promotional video.
