We’ve had just enough examples of theatrical releases that would have been commercial coin tosses in pre-Covid times that arguably overperformed pre-pandemic expectations to make me wonder if this original, high-concept, star-driven escapist disaster flick from a marquee director might just succeed where, for example, Dean Devlin’sfailed . Honestly, one big reason for my optimism is that the marketing reminds me of Warner Bros.

What stood out at the time, aside from the movie being surprisingly good, is the film’s unapologetic embrace of the absurdity.
