Ron Blomberg didn’t expect to make history heading into the 1973 season.
But coming off a hamstring injury suffered during spring training, Yankees manager Ralph Houk penciled Blomberg in as the DH in the team’s Opening Day lineup on April 6 in Boston.
Graig Nettles walked to load the bases with two outs to bring Blomberg to the plate and he walked to drive in a run. “Who knew the DH was going to last 50 years?” Blomberg said. “I never thought it was gonna last three months. I looked at it as being a pinch-hitter.”“A lot of us were waiting for baseball to get rid of it, probably for about five years,’’ Blomberg said. “Because every single year, people would talk about getting rid of it because the National League wasn’t using it.”
