Ex-president’s party wins Maldives’ first-ever majority in Parliament

THE party of exiled former president Mohamed Nasheed won the Maldives’ first outright majority in Parliament in its democratic history, officials results showed today. The final count released by the Election Commission showed Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party winning 65 of the 87 seats in Parliament, in elections held on Saturday – a more than two-thirds majority.
